The 2014 Günter Geyer Award for Social Conscience was yesterday handed to Ing. Martin Kaňa, Managing Director of Poisťovňa Slovenskej sporiteľne, a member of the Vienna Insurance Group (VIG) by Dkmf. Hans Raumauf, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Poisťovňa Slovenskej sporiteľne, a. s. VIG. Each year around 50 Vienna Insurance Group companies in 25 countries in Central and Eastern Europe can submit for this prestigious award. The prize money totals€50,000, which the winners use to further develop their current philanthropic activities.
The main reason for granting the award to PSLSP, according to Mr. Raumauf, is “to honor exceptional engagement by a majority of the company’s employees in systematic activities to aid disadvantaged communities. Particularly remarkable is the long-term and sustainable engagement of Poisťovňa Slovenskej sporiteľne in these projects.”
PSLSP and its employees have worked together for more than 3 years with the Pontis Foundation and Brána do života, which provides emergency services in its Victims of Domestic Violence Crisis Center and at the non-government Children’s Home and Young Adult Crisis Center. PSLSP’s involvement in charitable activities at Brána do života also contributed to receiving the 2013 Via Bona Slovakia, the most prestigious award for corporate volunteering in Slovakia.
PSLP Managing Director Ing. Martin Kaňa: “I am very pleased that the idea of helping out has found such a large response in our company. This spring we will successfully complete the third round of financial education for young people coming out of children’s homes. We have been making the life of crisis center children more pleasant through joint activities such as percussion concerts and trips in the last three years. These are the moments both employees and the children find enjoyable. I would be very happy if others could be inspired by us to do something spontaneous and useful for people who would sincerely appreciate it.”
Among other things, PSLSP has provided Brána do života with a grant for construction of a sports field. Its employees have been engaged in voluntary activities during Naše Mesto (Our City - www.nasemesto.sk) and regularly donated blood. PSLSP has organized a collection of food and other necessary aid for the conflict afflicting parts of Ukraine currently.
Pontis Foundation Program Director Ing. Monika Smolová: “Cooperation with Poisťovňa Slovenskej sporiteľne is a prime example for us of commercial enterprises and especially their people changing the world of the disadvantaged permanently for the better. We appreciate the cooperation from
Poisťovňa and value the willingness of their employees to devote their valuable time to encouraging those in difficult life situations, sharing their experiences and know how so the right decisions in life can be made.”
